From local activism to socialism
The Dutch Socialist Party (SP) and its youth department ROOD strive for a socialist society. We are the only Dutch political party with fundamental critics on neoliberalism. But we know we can't win the fight solely by working in the Dutch parliament. We believe things will only change if it is backed up by local activism, popular movements and democratic control from below. Because without struggle, nothing will change. But how can we involve youths in this fight? How can we show the link between the small problems, like a shortage in student housing, and the bigger picture of national and global neoliberalism? Recently we are getting more and more experience fighting for better youth accommodations and against repressive measures. In a few cities we have already mobilized the youth to protest, for instance against so-called Mosquito’s. Mosquito’s are ultrasonic youth deterrents that are used to scare kids off the streets (the sound really hurts your ears!), while at the same time destroying public social life. We want to discuss methods of local activism with other youth organizations. We believe we can learn a lot from each other. How can we best involve youths in our fight against neoliberalism and for socialism? We want your experiences, and we'll give you ours!
